work on display

March 29th, 2010

So for those of you who haven’t heard of Rosie Pope Maternity, and are pregnant or have been pregnant, you are missing out. Her maternity clothes are gorgeous and I feel very honored to have my photos on display at her MomPrep space across from her Madison Avenue boutique. Rosie is the star of a new show on Bravo, Pregnant in Heels. Being the expert on pregnancy, she will guide a selection of pregnant women who live in New York through what we all know as a very exciting, hormonal, life-changing, anxious and tiresome 10 month countdown. The show will air in the fall and who knows, maybe my work will be in the background of a scene or two. Keep an eye out.

inspiration

March 26th, 2010

I’m not one to consistently read Vogue magazine but this photo might have changed that. I was getting a manicure yesterday and Vogue was one of the magazines sitting on the drying table, Gisele (who is on April’s cover) was staring right at me. I thought, “What the heck, why not peek at how fabulous she looks only 6 weeks after having a baby before I head to meet my husband for burgers and a beer.” I have to say she looks impossibly fabulous, as we all knew she would. Even though Vogue said something along the lines that Gisele now celebrates her curves, which made me throw up in my mouth a little bit, I think I will be picking up the magazine more often primarily for inspiration. This image floored me. The light is breathtaking. It reminded me how simple it can be to take gorgeous photos if you know how to find and manipulate the light. I know, it doesn’t hurt that the model is Gisele, the outfit has been handpicked by a talented Vogue stylist and her baby’s perfect toosh is on display – I’m still making a note to self, remember to find and manipulate the light.

the lovers collection

March 22nd, 2010

Hope you all had a nice weekend. The weather was gorgeous here. Our weekend included dinner with friends at this a new seafood gem, Day Boat Cafe on Friday, a shoot on Saturday and brunch with Bren’s family in the city yesterday.

I’ll leave you with these beautiful prints I came across on Room and Board’s website, designed and inspired by one of  KleinReid and Eva Zeisel’s porcelain collaborations. They were also featured in my favorite Home section of the NY Times on Thursday. We plan to paint our living room a rich tealish/slate blue and I think these would really pop against the paint color.

There are days when I consider starting an Interior Design business. Hmmm… maybe one day? Owning and furnishing (or atleast trying to furnish- it’s a very slow and pricey process) our house over the last couple years has reignited my interest. I studied the subject for awhile at art school and worked at Gensler in NYC for 4 summers. Both my parents always took great pride in designing and decorating their homes. My father is an architect and my youngest brother was just accepted into Cornell’s architecture school. Design, home decor and collecting art have always been very prominent in my life. SO, I think I’m going to start sharing more of my own house and some of my decorating finds here. Chime in. I would love to hear your thoughts.

3 AM

March 18th, 2010

Tyler has a cold which is not only affecting his sleep but ours, big time. The last two nights have gone a little something like this:

step 1. prop crib

step 2. steam bath

step 3. aspirator

step 4. fill and turn on humidifier

step 5. apply baby vicks to chest

step 6. feed bottle

step 7. a little tylenol

step 8. soothe and rock to sleep

Relief until 3 am where we then repeat steps 3 – 8. Once again, last night (or maybe I say this morning) I heard the thud our newspaper makes as it hits the driveway and witnessed headlights dancing across the ceiling of our bedroom. Some of my favorite images by Todd Hido come to mind.

miss devon and her nursery

March 16th, 2010

Meet Miss Devon. Ummm, can we say CUTE?

Devon’s mom Melisa and I went to high school and college together so you could say we have history. Mom writes a fab blog, The Lil Bee and through the blog world won interior design assistance from the NYC-based Interior Design firm Lavender + Plum, which she used for Devon’s adorable nursery. They asked if I would come and photograph it and I said of course…

After we covered the nursery I couldn’t help but snap a few of the star herself.

This one = my favorite.

All our shooting wore Devon out and she got a little cranky at the end. To be a true model she had to break out her inner-drama queen.

Thanks to Michele and Mel for a great little shoot. I hope to work together again. Bravo girls!

Recent Wedding Details

March 12th, 2010

The night of the blizzard a couple weeks ago, I shot this gorgeous wedding at the Gramercy Park Hotel. Out of respect for my client’s privacy and their guests I will only be posting the details shots from the evening. And what an evening it was. As New York City fell quiet under the falling snow, an intimate, candle-lit wedding took place on the roof the GPH. The amazingly talented event planner Sofia Crokos, as always, made sure every last detail was perfect. Warm rich toned candles, linens and flowers (by LMD) adorned each table and every corner of the room. All was glowing. Enjoy.

the bright side

March 9th, 2010

So here I am sitting watching Oprah’s Oscar special, the Sandra Bullock’s interview to be exact, and Sandra says something brilliantly positive. “She’s missed so many moments but I think those moments wouldn’t have happened if she hadn’t been up there.” She was speaking of her mother who passed away. There are times in your life when someone says something that resonates completely, so deeply with in and makes you think and realize, yes that is SO true.  Maybe it makes a little of your sorrow lift and you see the bright side for a little while.

My mom passed away 7 years ago on this upcoming March 26th. It’s hard to believe it’s been 7 years since that life-changing day took place. She has missed many moments in my life – my wedding, the birth of my children, the birth and success of my business, etc. etc. etc. but to hear Sandra Bullock say that I found myself thinking, EXACTLY. Who knows how my life might have beeen different if she hadn’t passed away. I often think of the opposite, how my life would be if she was still here, and feel overwhelming sadness. Tonight I felt a little relief when I was reminded there is a bright side (not to be confused with the blind side ; ), for once. It’s not easy to turn a negative into a positive, but it’s never to late and I have strong admiration for those who do.

Vote for Ty and WIN

March 3rd, 2010

AND THE WINNER IS Cathy Blackstone! Cathy – Look for your digital gift certificate from 20×200.com to arrive via email tomorrow. If you’re wondering how I chose the winner, I had Bren choose a number between 1 and 10 (the number of participants) which was 6. Cathy was the sixth person to comment/vote. Oh and just FYI, it was a tie between photo #1 and #3. Hmmmm. Thank you all for participating. : )

I’ve been dying to break out my old Hasselbad camera, load it up with some black and white film and have a little photo shoot with Ty on my bed. Since it’s too cold outside and I don’t think he would be very fond of sitting in the over 2 feet of snow we have in our front yard, and since our bedroom is one of the only rooms we get really good light in our house, my bed was our stage. I have a photo of Conner at the same age (about 9 months) sitting in a park. It’s the same square format and is printed beautifully on fiber, matte paper. It’s framed and is hanging on the wall in our family room and I’ve been waiting for the perfect moment to take a matching one of Ty to hang right next to it. Now my dilemma, which one do I choose?

HERE’S THE DEAL:

Please help me make my decision and VOTE for your favorite in the comment section.

If you vote you will be entered to win a $50.00 digital gift certificate (which will buy you one awesome 11×14 print) from one of my favorite places to buy affordable art, 20×200.com.

Spread the word through Twitter by Retweeting OR by following me and you will be entered 2x, doubling your chances of winning.

Winner will be announced HERE Sunday, March 7th, 12pm, eastern time.

THANK YOU FOR PARTICIPATING.

ONE

TWO

THREE

ALSO, if you are interested, I’m offering a strictly black and white film session this year. The package is a little higher in price and doesn’t come with quite as many photos as a digital shoot includes but if you love what you see above, inquire within.

we made it

March 2nd, 2010

Miraculously we made it to the John Mayer concert this past Friday night. Thanks to my very brave in-laws who bared the crazy storm and made it from NJ to baby-sit for us, we didn’t miss out on our anniversary present to each other. I woke up that morning saying over and over to myself, “there is no way we are going to see John Mayer tonight, having dinner at The Standard Grill and spending the night at the Ritz” while I tried to come to terms with my disappointment. As the day went on Bren and I would look out at the sky trying to determine if the storm was coming to an end and amazingly enough, right about 3pm it did, just in time for us to make into the city to share a night alone. (THERE IS A GOD.) A night we had been looking forward to for quite some time. It was a great night which started off with a good ol’ fashion burger and one of the best cocktails I’ve had in awhile – The Penny Drop, served over a few huge square ice cubes in a copper/tin mug (for details, see below) at the bar of The Standard Grill. Then we headed to the concert where we enjoyed John Mayer (even after his much talked about risky Playboy interview) from great seats at one of my favorite venues in NYC, Madison Square Garden (because it’s not too big or too small). After, we tucked ourselves into bed where we stayed until 9am the next morning, which is pretty late in our world.

All photos shot with my new Lumix camera.

The Penny Drop:

2 oz. vodka
1 oz. ginger syrup*
1 oz. lime juice
ginger beer

Pour vodka, ginger syrup and lime juice over ice cubes in, preferably, a copper or pewter mug (if no mugs, a Collins glass will work just fine). Stir. Top off with ginger beer. Try to resist the temptation of gulping this drink down—it packs a subtly disguised wallop.

*You can make your own ginger syrup by adding crushed fresh ginger to simple syrup while it is on the stove or, even easier, buy a small bottle of it in a Chinese market.
