amazing

February 24th, 2010

baby food that I love, big time, and more importantly so does Tyler. Even I could live off these adorable pouches of roasted bananas, oatmeal with apples and cinnamon or the butternut squash and white beans (just to name a few). Sprout baby food by one of my favorite chefs, Tyler Florence. Sold at Whole Foods.

olympics

February 18th, 2010

This sums up my feelings towards the Olympics. Jerry Seinfeld’s I’m Telling You For The Last Time came out when I was in college. My roommate and I used to sit and listen to the CD over and over. Brendan and I also saw him in Vegas a few years ago. Absolutely hilarious.

cali here we come

February 10th, 2010

Our trip to California could not come at a better time. Next week we are headed West to see my dad and all of the boy’s uncles. We got dumped on today and it’s still coming down. By the time it’s all said and done, we’ll have about a foot of snow. Conner loved it though. Here are a few of him sledding in our our driveway, all taken with my new Lumix point and shoot. I’m still trying to get the hang of it so bare with me. I have to admit, I miss my SLR ALOT when I use it but am going to try to get used to it. It’s the only camera I’m taking on our trip. I’m a little nervous but really have no choice because all my gear is being cleaned. Definitely looking forward to traveling light and will post my results when we return!

the family chef

February 6th, 2010

I recently purchased this amazing cookbook, The Family Chef by Jewels and Jill Elmore and there isn’t one recipe I don’t want to make, all of which are healthy, simple and packed with flavor. The sister chefs are from New Mexico so a few of their recipes are right up my alley. Think burritos with leftover meat (yes, alot of awesome ideas for leftovers are included – love that!), tostadas, Mexican breakfast… I’m a sucker for all southwestern/Mexican/tex-mex food – anything with avocado, cheese and beans makes my heart go pitter-patter. There is also great chapter on soups. And not just plain old Jane, every day boring soups, but soups like Grilled Tomato Soup and Clean out the Crisper Vedgie Soup. Yum. Another favorite is their fish marinade which can also be used to dress quinoa salad, and that’s just to name a few highlights.

I’ve never read a cookbook from cover to cover like I did with  The Family Chef. I was captivated by their history and guidance. Jewels and Jill provide many gourmet meal ideas, leftover recipes and good little tips (for example, lettuce wraps) helping you to bring healthy, clean, tasty food to your families table for every meal. The pictures are gorgeous and the recipes are easy to follow (most cookbooks lack one or the other), all of which will add more than a little flair to your recipe collection. Enjoy.

mixed bag

February 1st, 2010

Since the new year I’ve started a new work out regimen which includes running in these brisk temps (yes, I invested in a bunch of cold weather running gear), a cardio class I’m in love with at my gym and also attending a semi-private training session once a week with a few of my girlfriends. Actually, my friend Blake is my main motivation. We’ve been doing almost all of this together. I’ve lost a few pounds and feel like a new person. It’s amazing the impact exercise has on your overall attitude and motivation. A little music from me to you. Slightly obsessed with P!nk when it comes to working out lately.

Did anyone see the recent Oprah with Michael Pollan of Food Inc.? I found it very interesting and am focusing more on eating organic, antibiotic and hormone free, local, seasonal food. I’m usually pretty good when it comes to our diet but occasionally get lazy and go to the closer and CHEAPER supermarket. Watch the trailer, if you haven’t seen the movie already. I find it criminal that fast food is cheaper than fresh produce and we have no one to blame but ourselves. This is the problem with our country. We have made it impossible for many families to be able to afford to eat healthy which in the end is only adding to the obesity epidemic. It’s the domino affect. Tonight – turkey tacos – all ingredients organic, farm raised…

I’m also back to reading for my book club. We just finished The Help by Kathryn Stockett and Half Broken Horses by Jeanette Walls. I loved The Help and thought Half Broken Horses was good but not great.

Working on getting caught up on alot of stuff for B. Waters Photography and trying to get my life back in order. Why do the holidays always throw things so out of whack? I’ve been trying to get our family photos in order from last year, working on an Ibook from 2009, putting a wall of my vintage family photos together in our dining room (I’ll post photos once it’s complete) and looking forward to exploring film again once it gets warmer out. I invested in quite a few new and fun little cameras, gadgets, etc. and will share my explorations here.

I will leave you with a photo of Conner today, drawing after school. He is very into coloring, painting and drawing which makes me very happy. My dad told me I would sit for hours coloring when I was little. It’s an amazing thing to see hints of yourself in your child. Nothing is more gratifying.
